Waiting for a repair, or passing through Plymouth? Here are some of the best things to see and do in and around the city.
Plymouth Hoe and Smeaton’s Tower
The Hoe is Plymouth’s big open seafront, with views across Plymouth Sound. Smeaton’s Tower, the red and white lighthouse that once stood on the Eddystone reef, was rebuilt here and you can climb it for a view over the Sound.
The Barbican and the Mayflower Steps
The old harbour area has cobbled streets, independent shops, cafes and pubs. The Mayflower Steps mark where the Pilgrims set sail for America in 1620.
National Marine Aquarium
Just across the harbour from the Barbican, the UK’s largest aquarium is a good few hours out, especially with children.
Plymouth Gin Distillery
The Black Friars Distillery on the Barbican is the home of Plymouth Gin and runs tours of the historic building.
The Box
Plymouth’s museum, gallery and archive in the city centre, with collections covering the city’s maritime and local history.
Royal William Yard
A former naval victualling yard in Stonehouse, now home to restaurants, bars and waterfront walks.
Tinside Lido
An Art Deco outdoor saltwater pool below the Hoe. It opens in the summer season, so check before you go.
Mount Edgcumbe
Take the Cremyll foot ferry from Admiral’s Hard in Stonehouse over to the Cornish side for the house, formal gardens and country park.
Dartmoor
The edge of Dartmoor National Park is a short drive north of the city, past Yelverton, for walks, tors and open moorland.
